sherylholdingrufus.Hi, my name is Sheryl Smolkin.

Although I was a personal finance blogger and columnist for the Toronto Star for over three years I am far from a frugalista.

We don’t have a budget. I earn money so I can pay people to do the things I don’t do well. I have a weekly cleaning lady. I get my nails done every two weeks. We pay to have the snow shoveled.

But I believe a sale starts at 50% off. Our mortgage has been paid off for years. And we have no debt and substantial savings. So why am I starting yet another Canadian retirement blog?

Well, even though I took early retirement from my corporate job as a pension lawyer in 2005, I quickly embraced an “encore career” as a workplace journalist. I still want to write about other people who have reinvented retirement and share crucial information people planning to retire several years or several decades in the future can use to pave the way.

AWARDS“Real retirement” is getting closer, but I’m still trying to figure out what that means for me. My hope is this blog will help me make the transition. I can’t promise there won’t be bumps along the way, but you are welcome to come along for the ride.

For more about the professional services I provide, see here. My full curriculum vitae and references can be found here.
